What should be done to deal with a large amount of tin dross generated during wave - soldering production?

I. Reasons for Excessive Tin Dross in the Wave Soldering Furnace:
1、When the high-temperature tin in the welding furnace is exposed to the air, it will react with the oxygen in the air, resulting in black tin dross. When the tin in the water-sealed joint rolls in the water seal, the high-temperature tin has extensive contact with the air, which is prone to generate a large amount of tin dross.

2、Due to human factors, it is very important to add tin blocks at the appropriate time. The most suitable time to put in tin sheets is always when the distance between the tin surface and the wave peak is the shortest.

3、If the tin dross in the repair furnace is not cleaned regularly, the molten tin that falls from the repair wave peak cannot enter the furnace quickly and remains on the tin dross. Due to uneven heating, excessive tin dross will accumulate.

4、Currently, the design of the longitudinal wave furnace on the market is still not perfect. When choosing the ideal longitudinal wave, problems may arise with too wide a longitudinal wave furnace, two longitudinal waves that are too close to each other, and a rotary pump that is too close. Due to the high waves, when the welding material falls from the wave peak, the temperature drop deviation is large. When the welding material mixes with the air and enters the tin furnace, oxidation and semi-dissolution phenomena will occur, resulting in the generation of tin dross. If the rotary pump does not take preventive measures, it will continuously compress the tin dross into the high furnace, and the cyclic chain reaction will stimulate the production of tin dross.

II. Solutions to Excessive Tin Dross in the Wave Soldering Furnace:

1、Tin Dross Inspection: Check whether there is a certain amount of tin dross in the tin furnace before it starts operating. Timely clean up the tin dross left from the previous work, especially in the wave motor area and the wave flow channel area.

2、Purchase Anti-oxidation Wave Soldering Equipment: The anti-oxidation wave soldering equipment is equipped with an anti-oxidation hood at the nozzle of the wave soldering tin furnace. The area of tin spraying during wave soldering can be adjusted according to the area of the circuit board, thereby reducing the contact area between the molten tin in the wave soldering furnace and the air and reducing the generation of tin dross.

3、Inspection of the Tin Quantity in the Wave Soldering Tin Furnace: The tin quantity in the furnace should be ensured to be within the range of 0.5 - 1 cm close to the furnace surface when the wave stops. If the tin quantity is small, the contact area with the air is large, the probability of oxidation is also high, the drop of the wave waterfall is large, the impact force of the liquid tin also increases, the turbulent flow rolls, and more tin dross will be formed. It is recommended to immediately add tin bars to the tin furnace.

4、Random Inspection of Welding Materials: Analyze the liquid tin samples in the tin furnace to check whether there are obvious changes in their components and impurities. Currently, there are a large number of welding material manufacturers of varying quality. Many manufacturers use recycled tin dross for the second time to save costs, resulting in poor welding quality and also being one of the important reasons for excessive tin dross.

5、Inspection of the Temperature of the Tin Furnace: When the working temperature is relatively low, the hot tin flowing back into the furnace from the nozzle is prone to form temporary non-melting substance accumulation. It is recommended that customers increase the working temperature of the tin furnace within the acceptable range of the product.

6、It is recommended that the operators remove the dross regularly. The dross must be removed before getting off work every day. When removing the dross, there is no need to run the circuit board. Raise the furnace temperature by about 10 °C (actual temperature) before removing the dross. It is best to use a small amount of reducing powder when removing the dross to accelerate the separation of tin and dross, which will significantly reduce the amount of dross produced.

7、If necessary, an appropriate amount of tin solder antioxidant can be added to the wave soldering furnace. The antioxidant can effectively prevent oxidation from occurring and reduce the generation of tin dross.
